Gary Mason powered the Quay Garage Honda to a front row start at Thruxton and made British Superbike history into the bargain, by becoming the first privateer to qualify for a first row starting place. Finishing 10th out of the 20 that started the second qualifying session, Mason took pole position with five minutes to go during the third and final part of qualifying.
